Troubleshooting Your Ting Sensor
You may have received a notification about your Ting sensor or need help with setup.
Follow the steps below to resolve common issues.
Step 1: Verify your Ting sensor's power
Make sure your Ting sensor is securely plugged into an outlet and receiving power.
- Avoid these outlet types: Switched outlets (controlled by a wall switch), GFCI outlets (typically have TEST/RESET buttons), AFCI outlets, power strips, or smart plugs. Learn more about these outlet types.
- Choose the right location: Avoid plugging your Ting sensor into kitchens, main living areas, or rooms packed with appliances/electronics. Ting is best installed in an empty wall outlet in a lesser-used part of your home.
Step 2: Check your internet connection
The most common reason a sensor goes offline is due to a Wi-Fi or internet-related issue.
Here's what you can do to ensure a proper connection:
- Confirm your internet is working properly.
- Test another device (like your smartphone) to see if it can connect and use your Wi-Fi network.
- Once you confirm internet/Wi-Fi are working, move on to the next step.
Step 3: Check the LED light on your Ting sensor
Tap the section below that matches the color or pattern you see on your sensor:

You'll need to reset your Ting sensor and reinstall it:
-
Find the reset button on your sensor:
- External button (bottom left of your sensor): Press and hold until the LED turns solid blue, then release.
- Pinhole button (bottom left of your sensor): Insert a paperclip and press gently until the LED turns solid blue, then remove.

Your Ting sensor cannot "sync time" with our servers.
Your Ting sensor needs to keep accurate time in order to detect hazards in your home properly. If this connection is blocked, your sensor cannot function as expected.
How to Fix:
- Unplug your Ting sensor.
- Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Wait until your Wi-Fi is fully reconnected (usually 3β5 minutes).
- Plug your Ting sensor back in.
If the issue continues:
- Check your router's user manual or contact your internet service provider to confirm your router is running the latest firmware.
- If the problem persists, contact your internet service provider and ask them to confirm that your Ting sensor can connect to time servers (time.nist.gov and pool.ntp.org) over UDP port 123.

Typically, a Solid Green LED means your Ting sensor is online and functioning properly, but if you are notified that your Ting sensor is offline:
How to Fix:
- Unplug your Ting sensor for 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
-
Once the LED turns solid green, check the Ting app:
- You can click on the real-time tab within your Ting app to see if the voltage is flowing correctly.
- If you still see an error message β continue below.
Otherwise, proceed directly to the steps below:
Have you changed your router's security settings recently?
- NO β The issue is most likely that your internet service provider is blocking your Ting sensor's connection. Confirm with your internet service provider that your Ting sensor can communicate over TCP ports 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS), and UDP ports 9500 and 9503.
- YES β Your router settings may be preventing your Ting sensor from working. Check your firewall/security settings to allow your Ting sensor.

The Blinking Green LED means your Ting sensor cannot communicate with our servers, usually because a firewall or web filter on your network is blocking the connection.
How to Fix:
- Unplug your Ting sensor.
- Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
- Wait until your Wi-Fi is fully reconnected (usually 3β5 minutes).
-
Once the LED turns green, check the Ting app:
- You can click on the real-time tab within your Ting app to see if the voltage is flowing correctly.
- If you still see an error message β continue below.
Confirm that your Ting sensor can communicate over:
- UDP ports: 9500 and 9503
- TCP ports: 80 (HTTP) and 443 (HTTPS)
- This link must not be blocked: https://spvsr.wtng.io/test
Confirm that your routerβs firewall isnβt preventing Tingβs connection:
- "High" security modes may block your Ting sensor. Try lowering to "Medium" or equivalent.
- Do not disable your firewall. If your Ting sensor only works with the firewall off, contact your internet service provider or router manufacturer.
- Review parental controls or content filters, as these can sometimes block your Ting sensor.
The good news is that turning off Advanced Security does not reduce your core network protection. Your network will still be secured by:
- WPA2/WPA3 Wi-Fi encryption
- Your router's built-in firewall/NAT
- Your ISP's upstream protections
- Device-level security (updates, antivirus, app permissions)
- Your network password, guest network controls, and parental settings
Advanced Security is an optional layer that may misflag Ting (and other devices). Disabling it may allow Ting to sync correctly.
