I received communication from Ting about a fire hazard. What does this mean?

When the Ting Fire Safety Team notifies you of a safety concern, it means Ting has identified a real hazard that requires your attention. That’s the primary reason for Ting: to protect your family and home. Therefore, it’s important that we work with you to locate the source of the hazard and mitigate the hazard before a fire can start.

Importantly, not all electrical fire hazards identified by Ting need a licensed electrician (aka, “contractor”) to correct the condition.  Most situations fall under one of four general scenarios:

1. Some hazards are easy fixes and not due to faulty devices or wiring.
2. Some hazards require a faulty device to be unplugged and removed from service.
3. In some cases, we may determine that a licensed electrician is required to address an electrical issue with electrical wiring, components, or connections. If an electrician is necessary, Ting’s $1,000 Service Credit will likely cover all associated costs and there will be no cost to you.
4. In other cases, you'll need to notify your electrical utility of a potentially dangerous fault outside your home / in your community.

How dangerous is this? How concerned should I be?

In our experience, every hazard identified by Ting has been verified as real and dangerous and could have caused a devastating house fire. In all cases, the fire was prevented because of Ting and the actions taken by the homeowner and our Ting Fire Safety Team.

Our experience suggests that most hazards identified by Ting are not imminent fire hazards. However, every home and hazard is unique and we do not know how soon a fire could ignite. If this was our home, we would want to deal with this situation right away.

How long does this take to resolve?

The length of time to resolve a hazard depends on many factors, including the source of the hazard and the potential need to schedule an electrician to support the mitigation efforts.  The sooner we hear from you, the sooner we can resolve the hazard.

What does the typical process look like? What is the process to mitigate the Ting identified hazard?

Typically, the Ting Fire Safety Team will work with you to gather additional information.

For example, we may request pictures of your electrical breaker panels, which you can submit via the Add Photos button in the Ting App.

Additionally, our team will inquire as to whether you have experienced any events in your home that might be related to the hazard detected by Ting.  From there, our experienced Ting Fire Safety Team will guide you through a straightforward and proven process to identify and mitigate the hazard.

Why does the Ting Fire Safety Team need images of my electrical panels?

Images of your electrical panel(s) and which breaker powers your Ting sensor helps inform our troubleshooting.

Should I call an electrician?

No. Not every hazard requires an electrician.  Our Ting Fire Safety Team will guide you through the process and recommend and coordinate an electrician should one be needed.

What is the Ting Service Credit?

The Ting Service Credit is a $1000 credit* that covers the cost of labor from a Ting Certified and Licensed contractor to remediate an electrical fire hazard detected by Ting.
